Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 2006 |
Coming up next is 2006's summer blockbuster "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", the next installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, in which we see Captain Jack Sparrow trying to best the devil and remain alive, while his friends Elizabeth and Will face their own set of challenges as they look to get married.
The film's cast includes Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Jack Davenport, Bill Nighy, Jonathan Pryce, Kevin McNally, Stellan Skarsgaard, Tom Hollander, Naomie Harris, Geoffrey Rush, Lee Arenberg, Mackenzie Crook, and Martin Klebba.
A dreary, rainy day is the setting for the wedding of Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner in Port Royal. The problem is: the only one at the wedding is the bride.
The East India Trading Company has arrived in Port Royal, and one man intrudes on Elizabeth's solitude.
His name is Lord Cutler Beckett, and he places both Elizabeth and Will under arrest for their part in helping out Jack Sparrow. He's also got a warrant for Commodore Norrington, but he's resigned his commission and no one knows where he is.
Beckett tells Will that he will free Elizabeth and pardon her with letters of marque if he will find Jack Sparrow and bring back his compass, an object which points to the thing you want most. Will agrees and sets off to find Jack.
Jack, meanwhile, is visited by Will's father Bill on board The Black Pearl. He tells Jack that Davy Jones is after him for payment of a debt that Jack owes. Jones raised the Pearl from the depths of the ocean and made Jack its captain.
Because Jack hasn't paid the debt, he is given the black spot, which summons Jones's terrible leviathan after him. Jack knows he's in trouble now.
Will begins his search for Jack Sparrow. After following up on a a lot of leads, he comes to an island where The Black Pearl has been run aground.
He's captured by cannibals and taken to their leader, who turns out to be none other than Captain Jack Sparrow.
Elizabeth escapes jail with the help of her father. She negotiates with Beckett to have Will pardoned once she helps him retrieve Jack's compass.
Two members of Jack's crew (along with the dog from the jail in the first film) find The Black Pearl and begin to get it ready to sail.
The rest of the crew are held prisoners by the cannibals on the island. Will is put in with them and Gibbs tells Will the story of how Jack came to be the cannibal's leader. Gibbs says that Jack is actually due to be sacrificed and eaten by them.
Both the prisoners and Jack manage to escape. The cannibals are hot on their trail, but everyone gets away on board The Black Pearl.
Jack bids the saddened island natives a triumphant farewell before a wave washes over him and dampens his enthusiasm.
The dog is left behind on the beach. The islanders turn their attention to it and chase it down the beach.
Jack Sparrow and his crew (including Will) stay away from the ocean and journey upriver to meet an old friend of Jack's.
Her name is Tia Dalma, and she resides in a spooky part of a swamp. She seems to be some sort of voodoo priestess.
Will says they need help in finding this key. Tia Dalma tells them the key goes to a chest that belongs to Davy Jones. He once fell in love with a woman who did not keep her word. In order to never feel the pain of love again, Jones carved out his heart and locked it away in the chest. Whoever controls the heart of Davy Jones controls the sea.
We are given views of some of the items in Tia Dalma's home, including a locket and the boots of an unknown man. Jack gives her Jack the Monkey as payment for her help. The monkey heads right over to the boots and lets out a soft cry.
Jack finds Davy Jones and Jack agrees to give Davy Jones one hundred souls in payment of his debt in three days. Jones calls of his leviathan with a hand/tentacle shake. One of the souls that Jack gives Jones is Will, who is none too happy to be onboard Jones's ship The Flying Dutchman.
Jack, meanwhile, has arrived in Tortuga and is putting together some extra crew. What the crew doesn't realize is that Jack intends to use them as his payment to Davy Jones. One of his conscriptees is the former Commodore Norrington.
On board The Flying Dutchman, Will is reunited with his father.
A familiar voice comes to Jack as he's preparing to board The Black Pearl. "Captain Sparrow, I'm here to find the man I love," says the voice. Disturbed at being the object of the "young man's" affections, Jack says, "I'm deeply flattered, son, but my first and only love is the sea." He motions to Gibbs to get rid of the boy. It turns out that the "boy" is actually Elizabeth, whom Jack allows on board.
In order to find the location of the key that he needs, Will challenges Davy Jones to a game of liar's dice. Will finds out that Jones keeps the key close to him at all times.
He breaks into Jones's compartment while he's sleeping. Jones is fast asleep at his organ, on which is a familiar locket. Will is able to get the key and escape the ship.
However, Davy Jones pursues him and sends his "Kraken" to destroy the ship that Will is on. He survives, however.
Jack, Elizabeth, and Norrington arrive at the island where the chest is buried. They find it and dig it up.
Will also arrives and is reunited with Elizabeth, who is overjoyed to see him.
Of course, Davy Jones's crew is also at the island. They, however, are one step behind Jack and company.
Jack removes the heart of Davy Jones from the chest and hides it elsewhere. It, along with the letters of marque that Elizabeth intended for Will, is discovered by Norrington, who takes both items.
A fight ensues. Eventually, Jack, Will, Elizabeth, and Norrington are able to get to The Black Pearl. But Davy Jones is not far behind them.
Jones releases his Kraken and it attacks The Black Pearl. Will, having battled the beast before, is able to buy them some time before it comes back to destroy the ship completely.
Knowing that the Kraken is after Jack, Elizabeth tricks him by seducing him.
Will sees this and suspects that Elizabeth has transferred her feelings from him to Jack. He is crestfallen. (The part where Elizabeth kisses Jack was not written into Orlando Bloom's script so his reaction would be genuine.)
Elizabeth actually handcuffs Jack to the ship, knowing they will be safe once the Kraken has gotten Jack.
They watch from a longboat as the Kraken devours Jack and destroys the ship.
Davy Jones is also watching and proclaims that Jack's debt is settled. He opens the chest and is horrified to find that his heart is missing.
Lord Cutler Beckett is surprised to find a visitor to his office. It's Norrington and he's filled in his name on the letters of marque.
Norrington drops a back containing the beating heart of Davy Jones on Beckett's desk. Beckett and the East India Trading Company now have command of the sea.
The crew of The Black Pearl, along with Will and Elizabeth, travel back to Tia Dalma's house, and witness the sadness felt by the residents of the swamp at Jack's death.
Will, still feeling the pain of what he thinks is Elizabeth's betrayal, tells her that if there was anything to be done, he would do it.
Tia Dalma asks the crew if they would do anything to bring Jack back. When they all agree, she tells them that if they're going to brave the weird and haunted shores at world's end, then they will need a captain who knows those waters.
Everyone looks in amazement as Captain Barbossa comes into view, having been resurrected by Tia Dalma. "So, tell me what's become of my ship," he says before biting into an apple and laughing maniacally. (In reality, the cast did not know who would be the captain, and their surprise at seeing Barbossa is genuine.)

And that's all for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Deleted scenes of Tortuga from the previous film in the franchise were added to this film's final cut. The makeup for Bill Turner's character took four hours to apply. The swamp where Tia Dalma lives is a recreation of the bayou setting of the famous Disneyland ride.
A post-credits scene shows the dog that was left behind by the crew of The Black Pearl. It is now the leader of the cannibal tribe.
