Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi - 2017 |
Coming up next, we have 2017's "Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi". Here we see our favorite Resistance fighters in their struggle against the First Order. Rey has gone to seek training from Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren seems to be ever in her thoughts.
The film's cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro, Frank Oz, Anthony Daniels, Jimmy Vee, Billie Lourd, Dave Chapman, Domhnall Gleason, Kelly Marie Tran, Justin Theroux, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Poe Dameron of the Resistance is leading an attack on First Order forces. His attack is successful in getting rid of a powerful First Order ship, but it comes at the cost of many lives. What is more, he did not have the permission of General Leia to do it.
Elsewhere in the galaxy, on the remote island Ahch-To, Rey has located Luke Skywalker and seeks to begin her training as a Jedi. He, however, wants no part in training any future Jedi.
Can we just pause for a moment to talk about these cute little inhabitants of Ahch-To known as Porgs? Adorable!
Rey realizes that she's got to find a way to get through to Luke if she's going to be successful in having him train her.
Still very upset about the loss of life caused by Poe's reckless attack on the First Order, Leia confronts him and demotes the trigger happy pilot.
The First Order initiates a counterattack, which severely injures Leia. She is able to stay alive by using the Force.
While she convalesces, Leia is replaced by Vice Admiral Holdo, who inspires the Resistance into action.
One person who is not impressed, however, is Poe. He challenges Holdo, but she firmly puts him in his place.
However, there are unseen forces that Rey feels taking a strong hold over her. Luke cautions her to fight them.
Meanwhile, Fin and new friend Rose Tico are traveling to Canto Bight in order to find a way to put a stop to the First Order, who have been tracking the Resistance even through lightspeed. They go to the Casino (which includes old ladies playing slot machines). We discover that Rose has a very personal connection to the place.
Before they leave, Rose frees some of the creatures that are trapped there. She also gives hope to some of the young slaves held captive.
Because of repeated mental interactions with Kylo Ren (son of Leia and Han, and one of the First Order head honchos), Rey decides to pause her training. She feels that Ren could be turned from the Dark Side. Luke urges her to not abandon her training for a mission that is hopeless.
Rey decides to go anyway. Luke watches her fly off in the Millennium Falcon and gets some sage advice from an old friend.
She takes up the mantle of General once again. She thanks Vice Admiral Holdo, who has elected to stay behind and sacrifice herself so that the Resistance can get away from the First Order.
Kylo Ren takes Rey to Supreme Leader Snoke, who wants to use Rey's power for the First Order. She refuses. A glimmer of hope is seen when Ren takes up arms against Snoke and kills him.
However, he wants to rule the galaxy himself. He invites Rey to join him. She refuses and escapes. Ren proclaims himself the new Supreme Leader.
The two forces eventually clash. The Resistance takes on heavy losses and is reduced to just a few participants who take cover inside the base.
To buy them time, Luke Skywalker appears on the scene. Everyone, especially Kylo Ren, is shocked to see him.
With Luke distracting the First Order, the remaining Resistance fighters are able to find a way out of the base with the help of some salt crystal critters.
When they come out, Rey (along with Chewbacca and a Porg) is waiting to rescue them with the Millennium Falcon.
Leia and Rey both feel Luke's death. Rey asks Leia how they can build a Resistance from just what's left. She smiles, grabs Rey's hand, and says, "We have everything we need".

And that's it for Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, was unhappy with the role. He told the director at the beginning of filming that he was very opposed to the direction his character was going, but that it was his job to realize the director's vision. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, who played Rey and Fin, tried to get in contact with the director very quickly after having read the script because they couldn't wrap their heads around the direction that the director wanted to go. Carrie Fisher, who had script writing experience, was repeatedly approached to help "doctor" up the script. However, she stopped doing this after she would give ideas and then the studio would hire someone else to write the changes without paying her for her input.
