TV Tuesday: Jumping Ship (2001)

Jumping Ship - 2001

Coming up on this edition of TV Tuesday is 2001's Disney Channel original movie "Jumping Ship", a story about a pair of cousins who take a trip to Australia, and end up going on more of an adventure than they had planned on.

The film's cast includes Joseph Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, Andrew Lawrence, Susan Walters, Stephen Burleigh, Anthony Brandon Wong, Jamie Passier-Armstrong, Martin Dingle-Wall, Todd Worden, and Carly Movizio.

Cousins Michael Woods and Tommy Biggs are headed to Australia for a little rest and relaxation aboard a luxury charter boat.

However, the boat they've chartered isn't all it was cracked up to be.  Michael, in particular, isn't thrilled with the look of the boat and of the captain, Jake Hunter.  But, with a non-refundable deposit, they've got to make the best of the situation.

Tommy loves being on the boat with Jake, getting his fill of fishing and swimming.  Sadly, Michael isn't having as good a time.  He doesn't like Jake's wisecracks about his wardrobe and has a very hard time with motion sickness and the cuisine on board.

Unfortunately for Michael, a group of modern-day pirates have run across the fact that he is wealthy (it didn't help that he arrived at the dock in a limousine).  They do a quick credit check and find that his credit card is unlimited.  They plan to hold him for ransom and then feed him to the sharks.  The pirates hop on their own craft and head out after Michael and Tommy.

Knowing they can't outrun the pirates, Jake has Tommy and Michael jump overboard and swim to some nearby islands.  Jake then takes the boat and disappears.

Once on the island, nothing could be more horrifying for Michael.  He's used to the comfort of Los Angeles, not roughing it out on his own in the middle of nowhere.

Once Michael finds Tommy, the two have to band together to survive the island wilderness.  Michael fails spectacularly in trying to fish and set up a hut for them to take shelter in.

Jake arrives on the scene and tells the guys that he had to scuttle the boat in order to lose the pirates.  Michael is definitely not happy.  Tommy is just happy to be on the adventure.

With Jake on the scene, the guys actually start having a little fun.  They start work on a sturdy raft and also do some spear fishing and lobster diving.  They do have to beware of sneaky saltwater crocodiles though!

The pirates track them to the island.  It's going to take all three of the guys working together to engineer an escape and teach the pirates a lesson they'll never forget.

And that's exactly what happens.  The guys end up commandeering the boat the pirates road in on.  They head home and come up with a business proposition that will keep them all friends and partners for life.

And that's it for Jumping Ship.  This movie is actually the sequel to the 1999 Disney Channel original movie "Horse Sense".  That film saw Michael travel to Tommy's Montana ranch for a lesson in hard work.  Matthew Lawrence had an uncredited cameo in that film.  This film was shot on location in Australia.  The "deserted island" beaches weren't actually deserted at all.  The main beach was actually a popular surfing location.  Crew members had to sweep the beach of footprints to make it look uninhabited.
