The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug - 2013 |
Coming up next we have 2013's "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug", the continuing story of Bilbo Baggins and his quest to help the dwarfs of Erebor defeat the dragon Smaug and reclaim their homeland.
The film's cast includes Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Dean O'Gorman, Aidan Turner, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Adam Brown, Cate Blanchett, Sylvester McCoy, Lee Pace, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Azog the Defiler is hot on the trail of Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, and the company of dwarfs who seek to reclaim their homeland Erebor from the dragon Smaug. The company seeks refuge with Beorn, a skin changer.
With Beorn's help, the group travels to the entrance to Mirkwood, where they hope to take the Elven Road and find their way to the Lonely Mountain.
Before they can start, a mission from Galadriel causes Gandalf to part from the group, telling them that he will meet them all at the Lonely Mountain. He also cautions them not to enter the mountain without him.
The forest of Mirkwood holds many dangers, among them an army of humongous spiders. They are rescued by an elfin warrior named Tauriel and an elf prince named Legolas.
Legolas conducts them all under guard to his father, Thranduil, who is king of the forest of Mirkwood. Thranduil has a complicated history with the dwarfs, and when Thorin refuses to help him recover some jewels, he tosses them all into the dungeons to rot.
Bilbo, however, (with the help of the ring he found in Gollum's cave) rescues them all and finds an ingenious way of getting them to freedom.
Thorin's nephew Kili is injured by a pack of Orcs who have ambushed them on their way out of Mirkwood. He survives the experience, but his health rapidly deteriorates.
Meanwhile, on his mission from Galadriel, Gandalf discovers that the Witch King of Angmar has indeed escaped his tomb.
Having narrowly escape the Orc pack that hunts them, the dwarfs must find a way to get to Lake-Town. They happen upon Bard the Bowman who provides them passage into the city.
Legolas and Tauriel decide to run after the Orcs and destroy them. And it turns out that Tauriel has taken a fancy to the injured dwarf Kili.
The company is welcomed by the Master of Lake-Town against the wishes of Bard, who knows exactly who Thorin is and why the company has come.
Thorin has to leave Kili behind when he goes to march upon the Lonely Mountain because of his now very serious injury that he sustained in the Orc ambush.
Those that do get to go to Erebor, Bilbo included, are thrilled when they discover a way in. Bilbo, however, is very unnerved when he is tasked with finding the King's Jewel and told not to waken the sleeping dragon Smaug.
Gandalf, meanwhile, goes to Dol Goldur to try and find out the enemy's plans. He gets captured by Sauron himself, and he also realizes that Sauron's plans are much further along than he first thought.
Once he enters the treasure hall, Bilbo starts the monumental task of finding the King's Jewel, which seems impossible.
Naturally, he awakens Smaug, and the two have some very humorous conversation while trying to find out about each other.
Back in Lake-Town, Tauriel comes and helps heal Kili, and the two share a few tender moments. Legolas is there too, and isn't happy with what he sees. For the time being, though, he is occupied with eliminating the Orc pack that has tracked them.
Thorin and company do battle with Smaug inside the mountain. Smaug is sufficiently angry to leave the mountain and take out his frustration on the people of Lake-Town. "I am fire, I am death," he says as he flies to the unsuspecting city.

And that's it for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. In Brazil, Smaug's desolation was felt when, at a midnight screening of the film, the cinema's speakers broke after Smaug's first roar. The character of Tauriel is a major departure from the book, as is the addition of Legolas. They do not exist in Tolkein's The Hobbit.
