Our next film is 2007's "Why Did I Get Married?", a story that follows four married couples who are facing severe challenges in their relationships. On a couple's retreat, they begin to confront their problems. Some marriages will survive, other's wont.
The film's cast includes Tyler Perry, Sharon Leal, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Denise Boutte, Lamman Rucker, and Michael Jai White.
Every year, four married couples come together for a vacation/couple's retreat. This year, they have chosen a wintry spot in the Colorado mountains.
Our first couple is Dr. Terry Bobb and his wife, Diane. Diane is looking to make her way as a lawyer, while Terry is a pediatrician. Terry takes issue with the way Diane is constantly working, and Diane is looking to break out of the traditional wife/mother role she feels she's been assigned.
Next up, we have the constantly arguing Angela and Marcus. Angela runs a successful hair salon, and Marcus, who used to play pro-football, works for her after suffering being injured during a game. Angela is a bit tired of Marcus's go-with-the-flow/passive attitude, and Marcus takes issue with Angela's explosive personality.
Successful couple's counselor Dr. Patricia Agnew and her husband Gavin seem to have it all together on the surface. Inwardly, however, both are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their young son. Gavin blames Patricia and it's eroding their relationship.
Mike and Sheila make up our fourth couple. Only, Mike doesn't arrive with Sheila. He arrives with Trina, whom he is having an affair with. Sheila just thinks that Trina is there because she is emotionally fragile and needs the support of friends. The reason Sheila didn't travel with them is she didn't fit in her airplane seat. Rather than travel with her, Mike makes Sheila drive from their home up into the mountains.
En route, Sheila can go no further because of a snowstorm. She has to take shelter at the sheriff's station, where she makes the acquaintance of Sheriff Troy, a very likeable guy.
Once they finally all get together, the ladies head out to do some shopping and talk about what's going on in their marriages.
The guys prefer to stay in and do the same thing over a game of billiards.
Things completely unravel over dinner one night. Everybody's secrets come out. Husbands and wives learn how each other is really feeling. Events turn violent when Marcus decides to choke Angela over some of her news, and Sheila breaks a wine bottle over Mike's head when she finds out he's been cheating on her.
All of the couples leave the cabin for home the next day. They are now forced to work on the issues that threaten to tear them apart.
Nobody goes through a greater transformation than Sheila. Instead of returning with Mike, she stays in Colorado and starts a relationship with Sheriff Troy.
At a dinner in Washington D.C. honoring Patricia, the couples come together for the first time since their disastrous trip. Marcus and Angela, Terry and Diane, and Patricia and Gavin have all worked things out. Mike and Trina are now free to pursue a relationship, but nobody's really happy that Trina is there. And everyone is shocked at how good Sheila looks once she shows up.
And they're even more surprised when Sheila reveals that she and Troy are married!
At the conclusion of a very moving speech by Patricia, the couples head to the dance floor and give hugs all around.

And that's all for Why Did I Get Married?. This film was adapted from Tyler Perry's stage play of the same name. In the play, the characters of Marcus, Angela, Patricia, and Gavin do not exist, and they are introduced for the first time here.
