The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe (2005)

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch,
And The Wardrobe - 2005

Coming up next we have 2005's epic film "The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe", where four children venture inside a wardrobe and discover a whole new world full of lions, witches, eternal winter, and deep magic.

The film's cast includes William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Tilda Swinton, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, James Cosmo, Sophie Winkleman, Liam Neeson, Rupert Everett, Dawn French, and Michael Madsen.

Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie are sent from their home in Finchley, London, England, during the height of World War II and the Blitz for their safety.

They go to live at the country home of Professor Kirke, a kindly yet eccentric man.

During a game of hide and seek one day, Lucy discovers a large wardrobe and hides inside of it.  Looking for the back of the great wardrobe, she discovers herself in a snowy forest.  Lucy can't quite believe what she's seeing and wanders around, the snow crunching under her feet.

Next to a lamppost, she meets a faun named Mr. Tumnus.  She is entertained by him at his home, and he eventually sees her safely back to where she came.  Lucy is very excited and can't wait to tell her siblings where she's been.

Feeling that she's been gone for hours, Lucy is astonished to discover that it's only been a couple of minutes in the real world.  What is worse: her siblings don't believe her when she tells them about this place called Narnia.

Eventually, Edmund finds his way to Narnia after he tries following Lucy into the wardrobe.  "I think I believe you now," he calls out.

Instead of a faun, Edmund meets the White Witch, who calls herself the Queen of Narnia.  She is very interested in Edmund and his siblings.  She plies Edmund with hot cocoa and Turkish delight, and asks him to bring his siblings to visit her at her house.  Edmund agrees, especially after the Witch makes promises to Edmund that include the future kingship of Narnia.

Soon, all four siblings are in Narnia.  Lucy is anxious for them all to meet Mr. Tumnus.  However, a beaver arrives and tells them that Tumnus has been arrested by order of the witch.

Inside the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, the Pevensies are told of a prophecy that when two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve come to Narnia, then the evil time will be over and done.  What is more, Aslan, the king of the whole wood, is on the move and is waiting for them.  However, Edmund has snuck off and heads right to the home of the White Witch.

At her house, the White Witch becomes extremely irritated with Edmund for arriving alone.  She's also very perturbed to hear that Aslan is in Narnia.  She throws Edmund into the dungeon.

As the other Pevensies siblings journey towards Aslan, they meet up with Father Christmas, who has finally come to Narnia after a long absence because of the White Witch.  He bestows on them some gifts before departing.  Afterwards, Lucy spins around quickly and tells her brother Peter, "Told you he was real".

And they all discover that spring is beginning to blossom.  Aslan's arrival in Narnia has triggered the melting of the harsh winter.

They find that the snow has completely melted by the time they arrive at Aslan's camp and meet the great lion himself.

Edmund escapes from the White Witch and joins his siblings at the camp.  The White Witch arrives and claims Edmund's blood as hers because he is a traitor.  And she reminds Aslan of the deep magic of Narnia that makes it so.  "Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch.  I was there when it was written," he proclaims.

Aslan makes an exchange with the White Witch: his life for Edmund's.  After he surrenders to her, Aslan is killed by the White Witch.  She then commands her general to summon an army for war.

The war begins the next day.  Peter leads Aslan's forces, and the White Witch arrives in a chariot drawn by two polar bears.

Susan and Lucy, who witnessed Aslan's death, are shocked when they see him alive again.  He explains to them that when a willing victim who has committed no offense sacrifices himself for someone else, then death itself would work backwards.  They hurry to join the war effort and rally reinforcements.

Aslan arrives and vanquishes the White Witch.  "It is finished," he says to Peter after she is killed.

Later at Cair Paravel, the Pevensies are crowned as Kings and Queens of Narnia by Aslan himself.

They are given splendid honorifics attached to their names: King Peter the Magnificent, King Edmund the Just, Queen Susan the Gentle, and Queen Lucy the Valiant.  "Once a King or Queen of Narnia, always a king or queen.  May your wisdom grace us until the stars rain down from the heavens," says Aslan.

After the ceremony, Lucy watches as Aslan disappears from sight.  Mr. Tumnus comforts her and tells her that Aslan will be back one day.

Fifteen years later, while chasing a white stag through the forest, the now grown up Kings and Queens of Narnia come across something they remember.  Lucy runs into the forest, and the rest of her siblings follow her.

They end up tumbling out of the wardrobe not a day older than when they first went into it.

Professor Kirke sees them and asks, "What were you all doing in the wardrobe?"  Peter looks at him and says, "You wouldn't believe us if we told you, sir."  The professor looks at him with a smile and replies, "Try me."

And that's it for The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe.  In the scene where Lucy first comes to Narnia, actress Georgie Henley's reactions to the snowy forest are real.  At the first time she filmed there, she was carried blindfolded to the set, and all of the reactions are unscripted.

In a mid-credits scene, we find Lucy trying to get back to Narnia through the wardrobe.  Professor Kirke is there and tells her that he has tried for many years and never gone back.  When Lucy asks if he thinks they'll ever go back, the professor tells her that it will probably be when they aren't looking for it, but it would be best to keep their eyes open.
