Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
2017
You don't automatically think of a Pirates of the Caribbean film when you think about Shark Week.  But this final installment in that classic series does indeed contain a shark sequence of a different nature: zombie sharks.  2017's "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" follows the continuing story of Captain Jack Sparrow as we close out his storyline with the search for the greatest treasure known to man.

The film's cast includes Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kya Scodelario, Kevin McNally, Stephen Graham, David Wenham, Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Brown, Danny Kirrane, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Paul McCartney, Anthony De La Torre, and Martin Klebba.

In this edition of the blog, I'll tell you some of the main plot points of the film and then focus in on our shark friends.  Let's begin, shall we?

Young Henry Turner, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, finds his father on board the Flying Dutchman.  He tells Will that he wants to break the curse that holds his father aboard the ship.  He vows to do whatever it takes.

Nine years later, we find Henry trying to accomplish just that.  Along the way, he runs into a cursed Spanish captain and his crew, Captain Salazar.  Salazar has a bone to pick with Jack Sparrow, whom he views as the cause of his suffering, and vows to kill him.  He asks Henry to deliver that message to him.  "I wish I could do it myself, but dead men tell no tales," Salazar says.

On his mission to help his father, Henry enlists the help of Jack Sparrow.  He also seems to need the assistance of Ms. Carina Smyth and a diary that she holds, which was written by Galileo Galilei.

We also get a chance to see what Captain Barbossa has been up to since the last film.  With Blackbeard's enchanted sword, he is now the power in the seas.  He's amassed a fortune in ships and treasure, and he seems to be living the high life.  Sadly, Salazar is attacking his ships trying to rid the seas of the scourge of piracy.  Barbossa frantically tries to protect what is his.

On their way to find the trident of Poseidon (the thing which will help break the curse and lead them to the treasure of a lifetime), Jack ends up being part of a bizarre marriage ceremony.  He's saved from marital bliss with this Caribbean beauty in the nick of time by Barbossa.  The two (with Henry and Carina) join forces to find the trident.

With Barbossa's sword, Jack can now free the Black Pearl from the bottle which Blackbeard put it in.  They happily board their old friend and sail away.

With Carina's skills in horology and astronomy, Jack, Henry, and Barbossa are able to put together some clues that lead them to an island which will point the way to the trident.

They are able to find the legendary trident and obtain it, but not before engaging in one final battle with Salazar and his men.

When everything is said and done, Henry and Carina walk along the bluffs near his home.

Henry is thrilled when he sees his father walking towards him, his curse now broken.  The two embrace as Henry begins to tell Will the story of the trident.

One other person is glad to see Will, too: his wife, Elizabeth.  The two run towards each other and fall into each other's arms.

In control of the Black Pearl once more, Jack even manages to make friends with his nemesis, the monkey Jack, as they sail away towards the horizon.

And now our shark scene.  Henry, Carina, and Jack are trying to outrun Salazar's ship.  Carina begins to undress so she can swim to shore.  Henry protests, and looks amazed as she takes off her dress and jumps into the ocean.  He excitedly tells Jack that he saw her ankles.  "You'd have seen a lot more if you'd kept your cakehole shut," says Jack indignantly.

To help catch Jack, Salazar releases some seemingly dead sharks into the water.

At Salazar's command, the zombie sharks come to life and begin to swim in the direction of Jack's boat, quickly surrounding it.

And nothing seems to stop these sharks from trying to rip the boat to shreds to get at Jack.

Eventually, Henry causes a distraction, which enables Jack to lasso a shark and use it as a way to escape Salazar and his men.

In a post-credits scene, Will and Elizabeth are sleeping.  The shadow of Davy Jones appears on their bed and Jones's claw is raised in attack.  After a loud jolt of thunder, Will is awakened and finds an empty room.  He gathers Elizabeth in his arms and returns to sleep, unaware that wet barnacles lay on the floor.
