47 Meters Down (2017)

47 Meters Down - 2017
Our Shark Week extravaganza continues with 2017's "47 Meters Down", a film that features a couple of ladies who go cage diving.  That cage dives winds up with them on the bottom of an ocean swarming with hungry great white sharks.

The film's cast includes Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, Chris Johnson, Yani Gellman, Santiago Segura, and Matthew Modine.

On a trip to Mexico after a bad breakup, Lisa and her sister Kate are hoping to have a little fun.  They spend their days lounging by the pool and drinking cocktails.  They also meet a couple of guys at a local hotspot.

Kate, however, is looking for something more adventurous than sitting by the pool all days.  When the guys suggest cage diving, she's all in.  Lisa is very nervous about it.

And she's even more nervous once she gets on the boat and sees the very rusty and seemingly unreliable cage that they will be trusting their fate to.

Once the move into deeper water and find the spot they are looking for, the ship's deckhand starts to chum the water (something illegal).

It isn't long before a massive great white shark appears, adding to Lisa's apprehension.

When the boys get into the cage first, the girls suit up.  Lisa gets some pointers on diving from the captain of the boat, and then climbs into the cage.

Once under the water, all of Lisa's nervousness seems to dissipate.  She's in complete awe of her surroundings, including the sharks which swim very close to the cage.

Initially as they are being pulled back up, everything seems fine.  The guys greet them with congratulations.  But, things quickly go south.  The winch on the boat breaks and sends the cage (with the girls inside) plummeting to the seabed.  They are now 47 meters down.

And the sharks are circling ever closer.  The underwater storyline includes having to change oxygen bottles, finding equipment out of the safety of the cage, and managing injuries.  Sharks even get super close!

When the girls finally have a way up, they must use flares to light there way and keep the sharks at bay.  As these things happen, the flare goes out and they have to light a new one.  The terrifying reality of their situation is brought home when they see multiple mouths full of razor sharp teeth pointed in their direction.

And once they break the surface of the water, the tension just doesn't let up.

The horrors just don't stop coming.  I won't tell you how things end up.  I will say that things aren't as they seem in the pictures.  But the film is no less terrifying!

Cast rundown:

   Mandy Moore...............................Lisa

   Claire Holt...................................Kate

   Chris Johnson..............................Javier

   Yani Gellman...............................Luis

   Santiago Segura..........................Benjamin

   Matthew Modine..........................Captain Taylor

And that's it for 47 Meters Down.  For our math majors out there, 47 meters is 154.2 feet.  I definitely wouldn't be caught dead down there, which is what I would have to be for me to even be in that water!  To replicate various organisms in the water, finely chopped broccoli was used and added to the diving tanks for filming.  Mandy Moore said that it was unpleasant and was like filming inside a soup.  One of the film creators is credited at the end with being a "broccoli wrangler".
