Dune: Part One (2021)

Dune: Part One - 2021

Coming up next, we have 2021's epic sci/fi adventure "Dune: Part One", which sees us traveling to new worlds as a young man discovers that he is more than what he seems as he seeks to bring peace to the galaxy.

The film's cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgaard, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, and Charlotte Rampling.

On the planet of Caladan, young Paul Atreides has a lot of dreams and visions that he can't explain.  His mother tries to guide him and make sense of them.

The Emperor has commanded that the House of Atreides take over the hostile planet of Arrakis, which is rich in a spice that makes interstellar travel possible.  It's an extremely lucrative business to be in.  However, the Emperor is fearful of the power of the Atreides and plans to star a war between them and the Harkonnen, the previous rulers of Arrakis.

Paul's father, Duke Leto Atreides, knows nothing of this and thinks the Emperor is sending him to Arrakis to bring peace to the planet.  A grand ceremony on Caladan seals the deal.

Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, has been cultivating Paul to become the Kwisatz Haderach, a clairvoyant who will guide humanity to a better future, one without war and who will unite everyone in peace.  The head of Lady Jessica's order, the Bene Gesserit, says that things have been prepared on Arrakis for their arrival.

Before leaving, Paul takes one last look around Caladan as he prepares to head off to an unknown future on Arrakis.

House Atreides arrives on Arrakis and finds that it is completely different from their home planet of Caladan.  Scorching desert temperatures and winds make being outside nearly impossible.

The local inhabitants have gathered to see the new ruling family arrive.  They point to Paul and start calling him "Lisan al Gaib", a sort of messiah who will bring peace.

As they travel to their new residence, everyone gets a bird's eye view of Arrakis and the place they will call home.

Elsewhere, corpulent Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, previous ruler of Arrakis, is making plans to invade and go to war with Duke Leto.

Meanwhile, Duke Leto, with the assistance of his best warrior Duncan Idaho, has made overtures of friendship with the indigenous people known as the Fremen.  Their leader comes to respect Duke Leto, and by extension, Paul.

The spice harvesting equipment that was left behind by the Harkonnens is not ideal.  Plus, the harvesting attracts enormous sandworms, which swallow the equipment whole.

As planned, the Harkonnens arrive and throw the planet into chaos.  Duke Leto's forces are severely outnumbered.

The Baron and his men incapacitate Duke Leto and sit down to supper at his table.

With his dying breath, Duke Leto severely incapacitates the Baron.  Everyone else in the room dies from a poisonous fume unleashed by Leto.

Paul, now the Duke, and his mother flee into the inhospitable deserts of Arrakis, where they come face to face with one of the dreaded sandworms (plus a really cute desert creature).

They meet up with a group of Fremen.  One of them is a girl named Chani, whom Paul has seen in many dreams and visions.

After a test of wills, Paul and his mother travel with the Fremen to their settlement.  It is Paul's intention to continue his father's mission of bringing peace to Arrakis.  As they walk, they see one of the Fremen riding a sandworm in the distance.  "Desert power," Paul remarks.  Chani looks at him, smiles, and says, "This is only the beginning."
