Lava (2014)

Lava - 2014
I take back what I said yesterday about the film we featured being the shortest on the blog.  The new title holder belongs to 2014's "Lava", which features a run time of about seven minutes.  In this adorable short, a lonely volcano longs for love, and the unexpected happens just when he thinks things are over.

Their is no dialogue in the film.  It's purely musical.  The vocal stars are Napua Greig and Kuana Torres Kahele.

I won't try to give the story.  I'll just post some screen caps and give the lyrics.

A long, long time ago, there was a volcano living all alone in the middle of the sea.

He sat high above his bed watching all the couples play and wishing that he had someone, too.  And from his lava came this song of hope that he sang out loud every day for years and years.

I have a dream I hope will come true.  That you're here with me, and I'm here with you.  I wish that the earth, sea, and the sky up above will send me someone to lava.

Years of singing all alone turned his lava into stone until he was on the brink of extinction.

But little did he know that living in the sea below another volcano was listening to his song.

Every day she heard his tune, her lava grew and grew, because she believed his song was meant for her.

Now she was so ready to meet him above the sea as he sang his song of hope for the last time.

I have a dream I hope will come true.  That you're here with me, and I'm here with you.  I wish that the earth, sea, and the sky up above will send me someone to lava.

Rising from the sea below stood a lovely volcano looking all around but she could not see him.  He tried to sing to let her know that she was not there alone, but with no lava his song was all gone.

He filled the sea with his tears and watched his dreams disappear as she remembered what his song meant to her.

I have a dream I hope will come true.  That you're here with me, and I'm here with you.  I wish that the earth, sea, and the sky up above will send me someone to lava.

Oh, they were so happy to finally meet above the sea.  Altogether now, their lava grew and grew.

No longer are they all alone with Aloha as their new home.  And when you visit them, this is what they sing: I have a dream I hope will come true.  That you'll grow old with me, and I'll grow old with you.

We thank the earth, sea and the sky we thank, too.  I lava you.  I lava you.  I lava you.

It's a really adorable film, and definitely visually stunning.  It's not all fiction, though.  The film was inspired by Lo'ihi, an underwater volcano growing next to the Big Island of Hawaii, which is the home of one of the largest volcanoes on earth, Mauna Loa.  They will eventually merge together, and Lo'ihi is scheduled to make an appearance above sea level in 10,000 years at the earliest.

It's definitely worth a few minutes of your time to listen to the song.  The video above only shows stills, but the lyrics are shown so you can sing along if you want to.  (Trust me: you'll want to).

Though the film was created in 2014, it wasn't given international attention until 2015, when Disney placed it in front of its megahit "Inside Out".  A big shoutout to my brother for giving me the idea to feature this short film on the blog.
